Paul McCartney's 'earliest' signature and school tie to auction

What is described as Paul McCartney's "earliest signature to ever surface", along with his school tie, are to be auctioned by Gotta Have Rock and Roll Auction house in America with an estimate of $4,000 - $6,000.

The autograph is from McCartney's school days at the Liverpool Institute High School, and is dated 1955-1956, and signed in the full J.P. McCartney (John Paul).

The autograph is on a piece of lined paper torn from the bottom right of a page, with some additional writing from McCartney, who would have been 14 or 15 years of age at the time.

In addition to the school tie the lot also includes McCartney's high school year book, and a school uniform badge.

Both McCartney and George Harrison studied at the Liverpool Institute High School, and the Art College that John Lennon attended had its origins at the LIHS.

The McCartney autograph is dated a year prior to meeting John Lennon.

An earlier signature is known on the back of a school photograph from August 1953.

The black and white photo was from McCartney's time at Joseph William Primary School when he was studying for his 11-plus, and sold for £5,000 in May 2013.

The earliest known pair of Lennon and McCartney signatures are in a Hotel guest book from Liverpool, dated December 22 1958, which sold for $16,800 at Gotta Have Rock and Roll in October 2010.
