Following the success of the Argentinian football team at the 2022 World Cup. Hyperion auctions, in St Ives, England, are offering a Diego Maradona match worn shirt with a £40,000 - £60,000 estimate.
The match worn shirt from the 1990 World Cup has an opening bid of £24,000 and is being sold with a letter of provenance from Alexandre Silva De Silveira, the Brazilian Football Confederation official, who had held the shirt in his personal collection.
De Silveira's collection also included a replica 2002 World Cup trophy that was sold by Goldin Auctions for $3,690 and a 1970 World Cup Champions Brazil staff trophy which sold for $1,320.
It's not stated which match the Maradona shirt comes from, but during the 1990 World Cup the Argentine team made the final, ultimately losing 1-0 to West Germany, with Maradona hampered by an ankle injury throughout the tournament.
Maradona memorabilia remains highly sought after with his infamous 'hand of god' shirt worn v England in the 1986 World Cup selling for £7,142,500 at Sotheby's in 2022, becoming the most valuable piece of sports memorabilia ever sold at auction.
The match ball from the same game, in which Maradona used his hand to punch the ball into the goal past England goalkeeper Peter Shilton, reached £2,000,000 in bidding in November 2022, but did not beat it's reserve price, so remained unsold.
The Hyperion auction also includes a Paolo Maldini Italy match worn shirt with a £180 starting bid, a David Beckham match worn AC Milan shirt with a £500 starting bid, and an (original) Ronaldo Barcelona match worn shirt with a £120 starting bid.
